Mid-Week Challenge

Celebrities, they are just like us, right? It is no secret that celebrities get special treatment and perks for just being them.  We often see them at high profile events, driving expensive cars and wearing expensive things.  Many times these items are loaned because the owners like us (the regular folks) to see celebrities at their events and using their items.  All “freebies” come with a price, though.  Venders expect loyalty and a positive representative for their products, and rightfully so.  When this trust is broken the relationship changes.  Actor Ethan Hawke discovered this when he went to pick up “his tickets” for a New York Knicks game.  After publicly criticizing the team to Jimmy Fallon for holding on to player Carmelo Anthony the owner decided that Hawke’s “services” were no longer needed.  In an interview with Bill Simmons Hawke said:

“I’ve been a Knicks fan for a long time, but I got kicked out of the Garden. They won’t give me tickets anymore…”  I would call up and say, ‘Hey can I get tickets?’ Sometimes they wouldn’t have tickets but they’d always hook me up. … And then I called up one time and they said, ‘That will be $7,800.’ I was like, ‘Oh, um, oh, why is this the first time you guys are charging me?’ They said that you should have thought of that before you went on Jimmy Fallon.”

Poor dude.  He was a big fan until they stopped giving him free tickets.  And why would they do a horrible thing like that, because he publicly dogged the owner and management of the team.  He discovered the old truth, “Nothing in this life is free.”

Have you ever thought about what it would it be like if God revoked all the “freebies” every time we had something negative to say about Him?  When was the last time you complained about the weather, your family, your job, where you live, what you drive, in general the “hand” life dealt you?  What would your life look like if God simply took His hand off in these areas and let you truly pilot your life? James 1:17 tells us: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. From the air with breathe to the sunshine on our skin, it is all from God.

More than physical blessings the Bible tells us about our condition if we are outside of the gift of Jesus Christ.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 -

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—Ephesians 2:8

The Bible reminds us that we know a good gift when we see it, but God out gives us all. If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 7:11

Today, why not slow down for a second and reflect on all the “freebies” in your life.  No matter what you are going through it would be a lot worse if not for the gift of grace from the Lord!

And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you.  Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9:14-15
