Mid-Week Challenge

You might have heard by now about this year's Miss Universe pageant
featuring the first transgendered individual.  Ángela Ponce was selected in
June to represent Spain in the upcoming pageant.  Ponce underwent hormonal
treatment and surgery to change from a man to a woman at age 16.  Now 27,
Ponce tells reporters of growing up in Spain, "there was nobody like me."
Ponce goes on to say that most of the recent criticism has come from women,
especially other beauty contestants.  "What strikes me is that a lot of the
criticism has come from women and people from my own collective, just when
women are taking to the streets to ask for recognition," Ponce said. "I find
it weird that some women don't tolerate that I go to a competition to
represent my country as the woman that I am. If we want progress, we just
have to stop looking whether what other women are doing is good or not."

And there is the problem.  Ponce might have had the surgery to physically
appear as a woman but his DNA will always be male.  Women are upset with him
because he has taken from them a limited position that only they should be
selected for.  The Spanish officials and all that support the decision that
allowed him to participate are trying to force others to go against what
common sense and nature has told them since the beginning of time.  The
reason we cannot come to common ground on subjects such as these is that
there is a small group of people who have hijacked "science" and classify
normal what we used to call a mental health problem.

In a speech yesterday, former President Obama used an illustration (on a
totally different subject) that makes sense, if only it would be applied to
all situations of disagreement.  He said, "You have to believe in facts.
Without facts, there's no basis for cooperation. If I say this is a podium
and you say this is an elephant, it's going to be hard for us to cooperate."

The frustration that many find in trying to understand those on the other
side is just that, the "facts". Reality is always changing with those who
want to argue from a place of emotion.  If you have no foundation then you
are allowed to change your opinion instead of changing your behavior.  Those
who have a solid foundation of truth (outside their own making) when
confronted with something new or something that makes them uncomfortable are
forced to change themselves or their way of thinking.  Those who live and
base their life on emotion and feeling, instead of finding common ground,
seek to force everyone around them to change or accept their altered reality
as normal.

The Bible warns us about the sudden changes in our culture.  In Romans 1:25
Paul warns that those who ignore reality and seek to please themselves have
exchanged the truth for a lie.  Those in the church are warned: For the time
will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit
their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers
to say what their itching ears want to hear. 2 Timothy 4:3

Just because the world appears to be losing its mind does not mean that you
do too.  Thank the Lord that He has given you a firm foundation to turn to
in times of unrest.  Pray that He will give us all the strength to stand for
what we know to be right, even when those around us are not.

Serving the Savior,

Bro. Jonathan
