Mid-Week Challenge

In Matthew and Luke 4 we are given the account of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness.  Jesus had just been baptized by John the Baptist, heard the Father’s voice and been identified as the Son of God.  He goes through this spiritual high point and then He is taken immediately to 40 days of tempting and testing by the devil.  We are only given a few of the temptations that He was put under but those few encounters leave a lasting memory with us.  After 40 days of fasting and praying the devil attacked His physical nature by challenging Him to turn stones into bread.  Jesus’ reply is one that most of us (having been very hungry before) would never think to invoke “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”  Most people would never dream of going to God’s word to fulfill hunger, but what if that is all you had?  Could someone live on every word that comes from the mouth of God?

Watching the evening news last night I got the answer to that question.  Seven weeks ago, a 19 year only Indonesian young man named Aldi Novel Adilang was working as a lamp keeper on a floating fishing trap used to attract fish.  Once a week his company would come out to the floating trap to collect fish and restock Aldi with food, water and fuel.  In July, heavy winds snapped the moorings that held Aldi’s floating trap stationary, casting him adrift. Over the next 49 days he drifted thousands of miles from home headed toward open sea, with no paddle or engine.  So how did this young man survive? The 19-year-old boy told rescuers that he survived by reading his bible and heeding the advice of his parents to pray.   “My parents taught me to pray to God during times of distress, and that is exactly what I did,” he told reporters.

“Every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” Those are just words on a page until you put them into use. God has promised that His word would not go out from Him and return void.  What a power message to us today.  The Bible is more than just words on a page, it is alive and active in our world and God wants to demonstrate His power to you and through you today.  Look around you and see where God is at work.  If you need hope or direction His word is the food for your soul and the compass of direction for your life!

So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.  Isaiah 55:11
