Mid-Week Challenge

If you have followed the news over the past few weeks you might come away with the idea that our country has begun a movement against children.  New York successfully passed a law allowing abortions up to and after delivery.  Virginia’s Governor was making the rounds supporting a similar bill until a racially insensitive photo of him surfaced.  Last week the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,” a bill that requires babies born alive, even in attempted abortion, be kept alive by all medical means, was shot down by Sen. Patty Murray.

Perhaps the most straightforward antichildren attack came last week in a CNBC story titled “You can save half a million dollars if you don't have kids.” Thinking the title might be too harsh it was changed to “Here’s how much you save when you don’t have kids” when it was published.  The story’s arguments reflect the headline as it’s reported that in the years between a child’s birth and his or her 18th birthday, parents will spend $467,000.  Conclusion: “If you don’t have kids, in short, you’ll save a lot of money.”

Of course, Twitter and the internet responded with strong opinions on both sides but more than anything the story supports the very self-centered culture we find ourselves in today.  For the first time in history we have groups of people who actually believe less is best.  Without any thought to the future, these folks think only of the here and now and their own needs at the moment. The inability to think past today puts these folks at a marked disadvantage in the future.  Heath care and the economy in their older years are the last things on their minds.  Like most things, those are someone else’s problem.  Socialism supports this type of thinking.  Who needs family, I will always have the government to take care of me!

God saw the potential for this type of thinking and He knew the ramifications on individuals and society.  His first command was to be fruitful and multiply.  The Bible speaks of children as a blessing, not a curse or something to be avoided.  The sad reality of this movement to eliminate all discomforts and hindrances from life is the fallout of being purposefully disobedient toward God. What one might view as a negative, God gives as a blessing.  Unfortunately, that is an often-used tool of the Evil One.  Anything God intends for good Satan will find a way to make it evil.

As a warning going forward, Christians should be on guard when the culture is quick to celebrate radical change to sensitive subjects such as these.  It cannot be counted as progress if it actually harms those it intends to free.  May we never give up on standing for what is right and beneficial even if it costs us a few extra dollars here and there.

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.  Isaiah 5:20
