Mid-Week Challenge

Valentine’s Day was yesterday.  So how did you do?  According to the hit song, You Can’t Buy Me Love, love cannot be bought, but after yesterday that might not be true.  It has been reported that spending for this holiday reached into the billions of dollars.  http://www.reviewjournal.com/life/valentine-s-day-the-numbers-how-much-americans-spend-love  On Average we spent around $136.57 individually.  As a nation we spend $2 billion on flowers and almost that much on candy!  The big spenders went for jewelry, dropping and estimated $4.3 billion in an expression of love!

Even with all this money and effort the best way to express love for another is still TIME.  Your personal time continues to be the one commodity that cannot be bought or sold.  As we mature and get to the point where we can finally appreciate what we have we realize how little of it we have left.  The most popular chapter in the Bible on love is 1 Corinthians 13. In these words of Paul we hear no mention of flowers, candy or the latest gadgets in expressing love.  What we do find is a list of attributes desired in our world today but often never found.  The very things Paul tells us that repeal love seem to be the things our world struggles to obtain.  Love knows no envy, ego, dishonoring of others, deceitfulness, self-satisfaction.  It does not seek to smear the name of another nor does it delight in evil, but turn on the TV and these attributes seem to get the most attention and are celebrated.

Is it any wonder then why our world is in the condition it is in right now?  Why do we spend so much money and time in the pursuit of love when what we are looking for is free?  But there is the rub, nothing is free.  To experience love one must be lovable.  To put the words of Paul into practice and to experience true love means I have to let my guard down, it means I must think of others before myself.  For some that is a price too high to pay.  That is why the people of our world fall short of experiencing the very thing they long for.

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.   1 John 4:8
