"It's déjà vu all over again," Yogi Berra exclaimed when he witnessed Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris both hit back-to-back home runs during the Yankees' seasons in the early 1960s. You might want to use this Yogi-ism to describe world events happening over the last month. The hurricanes, earthquakes, astronomical phenomenon and reports out of North Korea seem to have been the highlight of the evening news for over a month now. Over and over again these events appear to be repeating themselves. This has been a field day for conspiracy theorist. Global warming, political sabotage, X-files “truth is out there” folks have all weighed in on the events of the past 30 days. Not to miss an opportunity to appear relevant in the moment, Christian numerologist / Biblical prophecy folks have come out of the shadows to offer their explanation for what is going on in our world.
You no doubt remember the solar eclipse that passed over North America about a month ago on August 21. You might not have heard about what is happening September 23, this Saturday! The Sun will be in the center of the astrological Virgo the Virgin. Above her head, will be a three planet alignment, Mars, Mercury and Venus. At her feet, just below her, will be the Moon. For those who believe in these types of things and try to tie them to Biblical passages this planetary, Sun and Moon alignment is another end time prophetic fulfillment found in the Bible. Christian theorists also point to what is called the “33 Coincidences.” Since the solar eclipse in August, a curious number of coincidences around the number 33 have occurred. For example, the path of totality starts in Oregon, the 33rd state to join the union. It ends on the 33rd degree of Charleston, South Carolina. This type of a solar eclipse has not occurred since 1918, which is 99 years – or 33 times three. This, and other “33s” in Scripture, is why the latest apocalypse prediction is on September 23 – 33 days after the Great American Solar Eclipse.
Who is behind all of this? Christian numerologist David Meade has long researched, written and spoke on these topics. He uses Scripture passages such as Revelation 12:1–2 to describe the beginning of the second coming of Christ and points to what is happening in Virgo this weekend and the natural disasters that are happening in the Atlantic and Mexico. The passage reads: "And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth."
He also uses verses in Luke 21:25 - 26 to point to the solar eclipse and hurricanes as signs of the apocalypse. The verses read: “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.'
Wow, those sound really convincing until you dig deeper into Meade’s theories. Meade’s work is really focused on his theory of the so-called Planet X, which is also known as Nibiru, which he believes will pass Earth on September 23, causing volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and earthquakes. The long held conspiracy theory holds that there is a mystery planet out there behind the Sun or Jupiter just waiting to come out on September 23. Theorists have suspected that a race of beings live on this planet and are the originators of life on Earth.
NASA has denied the existence of Planet X for years and showed us how the “stars line up” like this naturally once every 12 years, but that has not stopped “End Time” prophesy theorist to point to it and attempt to make a connection with Scripture and current events. And so we wait for Saturday to see who is right, this time. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/acts-of-faith/wp/2017/09/17/the-world-as-we-know-it-is-about-to-end-again-if-you-believe-this-biblical-doomsday-claim/?utm_term=.cb462a1452f4
So how do we explain the coincidences and Scripture passages? The simple answer is we don’t. Jesus goes out of His way to tell us to not worry about what might come but instead be ready today. Don’t waste your time trying to predict the day and hour, spend more time making sure your house is in order.
“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” Luke 12:35-40
