Mid-Week Challenge

This Friday, October 20, 2017 is Openly Secular Day.  “What is that,” you ask? According to the group’s website (openlysecular.org) Friday is marked as a day to celebrate those who consider themselves to be atheist, agnostic, secular humanist, freethinkers, and secularists.  Openly Secular Day serves as a call to action for those with a secular identity by encouraging openness and dialogue around one’s identity and beliefs. What exactly does that mean?  The website has an area dedicated to ideas that one might venture into to “celebrate” the day.  Glancing over the list of things like clean up a local park, volunteer at a homeless shelter, run a clothing drive or visit a nursing home are all great ideas and no one would oppose anyone taking part in these activities.

Unfortunately those who traditionally consider themselves to be secular do not see enough mileage for the cause in these “thankless” activities.  Instead those who seek to push this agenda opt for disruption in normal daily activity to get the most bang for their buck.  Take for example the continued pursuit of the Colorado Christian baker who has been sued and penalized for refusing to bake a cake for a gay couple.  Now the same baker is being challenged to bake a cake for Satan’s birthday, all in the name of “protection of religion.” http://dailysignal.com/2017/10/13/exclusive-colorado-baker-asked-to-make-birthday-cake-for-satan/  I would also include the negative attention from the pushback of the National Anthem protests are getting.  Most Americans are tired of hearing about it but the NFL and media continue to push it upon fans.  We saw this in the one-sided media reporting when NASCAR owners took a stand against knelling.  Once again the media trying to turn it into a racial issue.  http://www.patheos.com/blogs/progressivesecularhumanist/2017/09/nascar-rejects-national-anthem-protest-confederate-flags-fly/  Or how about the atheist that delivered the invocation at the Iowa State House http://www.kwwl.com/story/35045434/first-ever-atheist-to-deliver-iowa-house-invocation How about the coverage received by the Christian “hate group” who handed out a pamphlet at the Values Voter Summit describing the health hazards of a gay lifestyle https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/values-voter-summit-anti-gay-pamphlets_us_59e0d0ffe4b03a7be5801895 The examples can go on and on because disruption and hate is their weapon, not loving on and attending to the needed.

But then again, come to think about it, Openly Secular Day may not be a bad idea if it means they would give up their hate tactics for one day and join with those who have a true spiritual conviction and who are actually making a difference for others.  Most of us would appreciate the help on Friday and really appreciate the break from all the noise!

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.  John 8:44
